Service of Remembrance for Barbara Lee Payne, age 84 of Elgin, N.D. will be Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethesda Lutheran Church north of Morristown, S.D.
Service of Remembrance for Barbara Lee Payne, age 84 of Elgin, N.D. will be Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethesda Lutheran Church north of Morristown, S.D. Rev. Karen Wilhelm will officiate and burial will follow at the Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday morning at the Church.
Barbara Lee Carrithers was born at Syracuse Kansas on July 30,1929 to William Beck and Fay Valena (Stewart) Carrithers. She was the third of four daughters Wilma Fay (Crowe), Alvijane (Wallingford), Marilyn (Rich) and one brother, Chester (Dusty).
Her family lived on several ranches along the Arkansas River in Hamilton County, Kan. Her education took place in Lone Star, Syracuse, and Coolidge schools. She graduated from Syracuse High School.
She married the love of her life, Harold LeRoy Payne, on May 24, 1947. After their marriage they farmed in Bear Creek Community, Hamilton Co., south of Syracuse, Kan.
To this union of marriage was born Joyce, Marie, Keith and Zelda. They continued to farm there until 1960 when they so adventurously moved to a ranch/farm in Grant County South of Elgin, N.D.
This ranch contains the Pretty Rock Buttes. Barbara was a partner with her husband until his death from a tractor accident in 1971.
After that time she continued to partner with her son, Keith and wife, Gloria.
On this ranch the motto was always “children are our most important crop.” She was a gardener, quilter, friend and neighbor who enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She continued to live her life on this ranch /farm until failing health placed her in JMHCC in Elgin, N.D., where she resided for the last several months.
Barbara was very active in community organizations including: Bear Creek Extension Club, Bethesda Lutheran Church, ELCW, Sunday School Teacher, Green Meadow 4-H Leader, Pretty Rock and Lone Prairie Ext. Clubs, Farm Bureau Board, JMHCC Board of Directors, Elgin FHA Chapter Mother, Dakota and Grant County Resource Council, Assessor for Pretty Rock Township, Grannie Club, Bits and Pieces Quilting Guild.
Barbara passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 at Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Elgin at the age of 84.
Survivors include children: Joyce Durick, Big Stone City, S.D.; Marie (Milton) Klein, Elgin, N.D.; Keith (Gloria) Payne, Elgin, N.D.; Zelda (Steven) Gebhard, Edgeley, N.D.; 12 grandchildren: Scott Durick, Kent Durick, Myra (Robert) Olson, Mark Klein, Amy (Andy) Sticha, Debbie(Phil) Riely, Beth (Lincoln)Roth, Gwen (Tyler) Fischer, Bryan (Sara) Gebhard, Alan (Joy) Gebhard, Clark (Melinda) Gebhard, Alex Gebhard ; 25 great grandchildren; sisters: Wilma Crowe of Redding, Calif.; Alivijane Wallingford of Portland, Ore.; Marilyn Rich of Carson City, Nev.; and sister-in-laws: Velma (Gene) Walker, Emporia, Kan.; Lola (George) Fox, Syracuse, Kan.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Payne; parents, William and Fay Carrithers; brother, Chester Carrither; and son-in-law, Steve Durick.
