Gloria R. Hendry, age 81 of Hettinger, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, N.D. She died after a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
The Funeral Service for Gloria will be held at 11 a.m. MT Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014 at the Centennial Chapel of the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger. Pastor Gary Weems and Pastor Ben Baker will officiate with burial in the Tuttle Cemetery, along side of her husband, south of Rhame.
Special music will be provided by Jill Tescher, soloist.
Serving as casketbearers are Bill Johnson, Steve Raisler, George Weinreis, Todd Overton, Bill Zupanik, and Scott Long.
She was born Feb. 10, 1932 in Kossuth County Iowa to John D. and Winifred (Norris) Long. She attended elementary school in Iowa and in 1944, she moved with her family to a ranch on the Little Missouri north of Marmarth, N.D. She attended school in Marmarth and graduated in 1949. After high school she went to Dickinson Normal School for a summer course where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught at a country school south of Rhame.
She married Robert Hendry in September 1951 and they began their life together on the Hendry Family Ranch north of Rhame where they lived until 1961. They purchased her family’s ranch, the Long Family Ranch, north of Marmarth and ranched there until 1966. They sold that ranch and then purchased a ranch east of Golva. Bob and Gloria retired in 1997 and did quite bit of traveling with their 5th wheel camper. They continued to reside on the ranch at Golva. In August of 2002, her husband Bob passed away. Gloria sold the ranch in 2004 and moved into Beach, N.D.
She was active in her church, the Senior Center, and the Golden Valley Manor. Her health forced her to move to Hettinger to be near a medical facility and she could also enjoy more time with her only granddaughter, Heidi.
She did extensive world traveling with her daughter, Cindy. They went to Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Canada and Europe. The high point for her was their trip to China and being able to walk on the Great Wall of China in the summer of 2012. She enjoyed reading, playing pinochle, and crocheting. On her bucket list was a camping trip she made with Mark and Lyn to Missoula, Mont. to see the hand carved carousel.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Hendry of Bismarck, N.D.; son, Mark (Lyn) Hendry, Hettinger, N.D.; and granddaughter Heidi Hendry, Jamestown, N.D.; one brother, Duane (Carol) Long, Billings, Mont.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her husband’s parents, five brothers -in-law, her brother, Jack Long, and two sisters, Bev (Winfield) Austin, and Sandy (Bill) Zupanik, and a niece.
