Both the varsity boys and girls Nighthawk basketball teams took on arch rival Lemmon in successive Saturday night games. The boys played on 21 Dec and both the junior varsity (JV) and varsity came out with easy victories. The JV won 58-17 with Nevan Weaver leading the way with a double/double, scoring 17 and pulling down 10 rebounds, according to my unofficial stats. Sam Kludt chipped in with 14 including three 3-pointers. The varsity followed that with a convincing 63-29 win. Hayden Sadowsky paced the Nighthawks in scoring with 20 points and Brandon Pierce had another all around game with 18 points, 13 rebounds and six steals.
The girls did not fare as well on 28 Dec as the JV lost to Lemmon 35-31 and the varsity absorbed a 60-39 loss. The second half again was their downfall as they only trailed by three points at half time, but were outscored, 33-15, in the second half. Working on better rebounding and not allowing so many close-in buckets will help. Kaitlin Reitz led the way with 12 points.
Although SD West River Class B teams have been left out of the early SD state girls rankings, Lemmon is one of the SD West River Class B teams such as Newell, Jones County, Timber Lake, White River, Harding County and Wall who will battle for state tournament berths according to the Rapid City Journal. Lemmon’s only loss last season was to Newell in the district tournament and it lost its top two players – all-stater Haley Froelich and freshman Morgan Ham, who moved to Belle Fourche.
The varsity boys basketball team finished 7th in the Mandan Holiday tournament. They opened with a 60-59 loss to Grant County, lost to New Salem-Almont, 57-45, and then defeated Bottineau, 67-51. In their loss to Grant County they were up by 18 points at half time. Shiloh Christian won the tournament by beating Wilton-Wing, 50-32.
The annual Nighthawk Wrestling Classic starts today, 3 Jan and run through 4 Jan in Hettinger. According to Track Wrestling there a 15 teams competing including Baker and Circle MT, Moorcroft WY, Linton-HMB and newcomer Des Lacs-Burlington. If my memory is correct, Moorcroft won it last year with Linton 2nd and Hettinger-Scranton 3rd.
Colbey Steeke placed 8th in the prestigious Rumble-On-The Red wrestling tournament in Fargo. There were 35 wrestlers in his weight division, 195, and his record was 4-3. He was the only participant for the Nighthawks. Apple Valley, MN, won the tourney with 343 points, out distancing runner-up West Fargo who finished with 187.5. There were 69 teams involved.
Hettinger-Scranton’s sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:
– 3-4 Jan, Varsity Girls BB at Turtle Lake in the McLean County Jamboree
– 3-4 Jan, Varsity Wrestling at Hettinger in the Nighthawk Classic
– 6 Jan, Varsity Girls BB vs McIntosh at Hettinger
– 7 Jan, Varsity Boys BB at Killdeer
– 9 Jan, Varsity Boys BB at Faith

Hoping everyone has a great New Year.
