The Speech Team completed their third-in-a-row back-to-back weekend of invitational tournaments.  They traveled to Dickinson Trinity/Dickinson High/New England’s Medlar Memorial Meet on Friday, March 7.  Then, they traveled back north to Richardton for the annual “I-94” meet.  We now have two members who have state-qualified in two of the biggest invitational tournaments in the state.  Both meets hosted four Fargo schools, five Bismarck and Mandan schools, and other Class A and B schools that have huge numbers of competitors.

At Dickinson’s meet, Michael Shirek was the best of Class B and state-qualified (for the third time in a row) with a 2nd place finish in Serious Interpretation.  Josh Quals was also the best of Class B and state-qualifed with his 2nd place finish in Speech to Entertain.  Michael also took 3rd in Impromptu Speaking; and, Josh had a 7th place trophy for his Speech to Inform.  Receiving an Honorary Novice Award was Pressida Clarke, and receiving the Honorary Team Leadership Award was Dillon Hanson.

At the “I-94” tournament, Michael state-qualified (for the fourth time in a row) with his 2nd place finish in Serious Interpretation.  He is going to try at least one new event in the upcoming meets and save his Serious Interp for Regionals.  Dillon Hanson won 4th in Storytelling.  And, Josh excelled in three events: 5th in Speech to Inform, 7th in Speech to Entertain, and 8th in Radio Broadcasting.

Individually, the team members faced huge numbers of participants and had the follow results at the Dickinson meet.

There were 36 competitors in Serious Interp in which Michael had a 1 and a 3 in prelims and a 1, 2, and 4 in finals.  Pressida also had a 1 in a preliminary round.

Twenty-one spoke in Impromptu where Michael had a 1 and a 3 in prelims and the same scores of a 1 and a 3 in finals.

Eighteen performers were in Speech to Entertain where Josh had a 1 and a 3 in prelims, and two 2’s and a 3 in finals.  Dillon also participated in this event.

In Speech to Inform, Josh was one of the eighteen in that event, too, in which he had a 3 and a 4 to break finals.  Savanna Robbins also had a 3 in a preliminary round.

Of the 22 Serious Duos, Skylynne Cummings and Savanna had a 3 in a prelim.

Skylynne was also one of the 23 in EPR, receiving a 2 in a prelim.

Twenty-seven—a huge number for this event—participated in Radio where Josh had a 2 and a 4 in prelims.

There were 38 interpreters in the Poetry category, with Pressida getting a 2 and a 4, and Keisha Hendricks getting a 2 in prelims.

Dramatic Interpretation had 30 participants with Savanna having a 4, and Keisha also performing.

There were 43 in Humorous Interp with Michael having two 3’s in prelims.

Dillon had a 1and a 3 in prelims in Storytelling, and had a 3 and a 4 in finals.

The next day, in Richardton, we actually had bigger numbers and more teams—so much that we had six rounds of preliminaries instead of the usual two rounds for each event with seven events per flight.  Therefore, we had five events, five more events, and then four events –but still twice in prelim competition. Individually, our students “held their own.”

There were 44 in Poetry Interpretation with Pressida having a 1 and a 3, and just missing finals.  Stephanie Odom also had a 4 in prelims.

Of the 28 Impromptu speakers, Michael had a 3 and a 4 in prelims.

There were 53—wow—Humorous Interpreters.  Michael had a 2 and a 3, and Dillon had two 3’s in prelims.

Of the 47 Serious Interpreters, Michael had a 1 and a 2 in prelims and then a 1 and a 3 in finals.  Pressida had a 3 and a 4 in prelims.

Skylynne had a 3 and Keisha also participated in EPR with a total of 38 participants.

In Entertain, there were 23 performers.  Josh had a 1 and a 2 in prelims to break finals; Dillon also participated.

Twenty-six spoke in Inform where Josh had a 2 and a 3 in prelims and a 2 in finals.  Savanna also had a 2 in a preliminary round.

In Radio Broadcasting, there were 36 competitors, with Josh getting a 1 and a 4 to break finals.

Fifty Humorous Duos—that is 100 kids—were performed with Dillon and Stephanie getting a 4 in a prelim.

In Serious Duo, 33 pieces were performed—that is 66 kids total—in which Skylynne and Savanna had a 4 in prelims; and, Josh and Keisha also participated.

Keep in mind only the top eight in every event get to be in finals.  Our kids did really well and are really great!
