Our Speech Team members needed a one-day speech weekend, and since this just happened to be on a day when we didn’t have school, they had a bit of rest before we headed out west, but not everyone could make the trip again. Newcomer Jassmyn Magnuson did well at her first meet, and we had some members who finally had the chance to break finals because of lower numbers at the tournament and because there was only one Class A school there.
Our place-winners were as follows: Michael Shirek – 4th in Humorous Interpretation and 5th in Impromptu Speaking; Josh Qualls – 4th in Speech to Inform and 6th in Radio Broadcasting;
Jassmyn –6th in Speech to Persuade; Josh and Keisha Hendricks – 7th in Serious Duo; Pressida Clarke – 7th in Poetry Interpretation; and, Savanna Robbins – 8th in Dramatic Interpretation.
Individually and by event, this is how our students fared and how many participants there were in each category/event in which we had competitors.
There were 36 in Humorous Interp with Michael having a 1 and a 2 in prelims, and then a 2, 3, and 4 in finals. Josh Qualls also participated with his new piece.
There were only 8 Impromptu Speakers, just making this a state-qualifying event—and Michael had a 3 and a 4 in that final. (This means that the students participated in just one round with three judges and then the 1st place winner qualifies for state.)
Of the 13 Informers, Josh had a 1 and a 4 in prelims and a 3 in finals; Savanna also participated.
Eight also participated in one round of Speech to Persuade with Jassmyn having a 3 in that final.
Twenty Serious Duos were performed. Josh and Keisha had a 3 and a 4 to break finals. Skylynne and Savanna had a 4 in a preliminary round.
Pressida did well—with two others on our team–among the 23 in Poetry Interpretation. She had two 2’s to break finals and a 3 in finals. Keisha had a 2 and a 4 in prelims, and Jassmyn was our 3rd contestant.
There were 16 in Dramatic Interpretation. Savanna had a 2 and a 4 to break finals; Keisha had a 4 in prelims.
In Serious Interpretation, Pressida had a 4 in prelims. Skylynne had a 4 in EPR with 12 other contestants.
The second biggest event—Humorous Duo—had 30 duos—that is 60 kids! Michael and Jassmyn debuted theirs and had a 2 and a 3, just missing finals. Savanna and Pressida also performed a new combination.
The next meet will be in Killdeer on Friday, March 28. Then, we have the Last Hurrah at Richardton on April Fool’s Day before Regional on Thursday, April 10. Wish us luck!
