West River Ambulance’s Annual Shelly’s Safety Day was held Saturday, June 14.  The event was schedule to be held at Mirror Lake Park, but a steady rain moved participants into the newly remodeled Grainery.

Children grades one through five joined in for a day of safety fun starting with Sun Safety, by West River Health Services.

Tracy Minh, Hettinger Pool Manager and her assistant Regan Minh taught the kids about Water Safety.  They stressed the importance of the slogan “Reach or Throw, Don’t Go” when it comes to helping someone in the water.  The WRHS Ambulance staff presented first aid information and demonstrations.  The children also got to see the inside of the ambulance first hand.

Everyone was excited when Alli the Safety Cow and Farmer Gary came for a visit to teach the kids about Farm Safety. Theron Schalesky represented the ND Department of Transportation as he taught the kids about equipment safety.  The children were very excited when they got to take turns seeing the equipment up close!

The Sheriff’s Department presented Bike Safety and Stranger Danger.  The children had their fingerprints taken on an identification form and got to hear the blaring siren of the Sheriff’s vehicle.

Shelly’s Safety Day began as a result of a tragic accident that killed Shelly.  Her daughter was saved due to the safety that Shelly took in placing her infant in a car seat properly and in the proper location.

A special thanks to everyone who took time out of their day to help teach our children about safety.  Thank you also for the donations made to the kid’s Safety Packets from the organizations mentioned above as well as the ND Game and Fish Dept and the ND Cancer Coalition.  Thank you to Alliance Ag for providing lunch, Pepsi for providing water and Hettinger Candy Co. for providing a snack.  A very big thank you for the use of the Grainery which helped keep the kids out of the elements.
