Hettinger-Scranton’s (HS) Babe Ruth team took a double header from Lemmon on 16 July to finish the regular season undefeated in District play.
Next up is the District tournament with the winner advancing to the Regional in a best two out of three format. Whoever wins the District tourney will host the Regional. The winner will then head for the State tournament.
Jarad Mattis started on the mound for HS and went the distance in a 7-3 opening game win. He gave up six hits, walked two, struck out 10 and hit two batters. Jace Kocer absorbed the loss for Lemmon.
The 4th inning turned out to be his down fall as HS loaded the bases with two singles and a walk with no outs and ended up scoring four runs. Tate Resner provided the big hit with a two-run single.
HS picked up two insurance run in the 6th thanks to Lemmon wild pitches and passed balls.
HS did commit a baseball cardinal sin in the 4th inning. Tight game, bases loaded and instead of taking on a 3-0 pitch, the batter swings and misses. Fortunately, he did end up walking and driving in a run.
The second game ended up in a slugfest and only lasted three innings due to the run rule. HS pulled out a 21-9 victory. Jordan Dilse was the winning pitcher although he was roughed up for seven hits, walked two and gave up nine runs. But Lemmon pitching was having their problems getting the ball over the plate and when they did HS was banging out the hits for a total of ten. Jacob Dix did most of the damage with three hits and six RBIs, included was a three-run triple in their 14 run third inning.
Lemmon’s starting pitcher was finally removed in the third inning after plunking three straight HS batters.
