The varsity girls’ basketball team kicks off their season this weekend with the McLean County tournament. They will take on Underwood and Wilton-Wing, both are District 10 teams. Comments from head coach Kelly Pierce:
“So far the coaching staff likes what we are seeing out of the team. They are competing hard in practice and many players have shown a lot of improvement. We had the opportunity to scrimmage Killdeer and Dickinson Trinity a week ago, so we were able to get a grasp of where we were at and what we needed focus on prior to our first game”.
“We are looking forward to the games in the McLean Co. Shootout this weekend. We do not know whole lot about our opponents, Underwood and Wilton-Wing, but we are ready to go against someone other than ourselves. It will be a good chance to play a lot of players and see how they compete in a varsity competition”.
The varsity wrestling team will have a busy week as they have a match at New Salem on Dec. 4 and are in the tough Mandan Lions tourney, Dec. 5-6. Hettinger-Scranton will be the only Class B team entered. Coach Randy Burwick plans on sending 12 wrestlers to the Mandan tourney. Last year’s results are as follows:
Dec. 6-7, 2013
1 Bismarck 327
2 Sturgis 307
3 RC Central 282.5
4 Century 272
5 TMCHS 224
6 RC Stevens 190
7 St. Mary\’s 132.5
8 Dickinson 126
9 Fargo North 110.5
10 Mandan 106.5
11 Hettinger 81
12 GF Red River 72
Last week I questioned why NDHSAA put Mandaree in Region 7 when it looks to me a better fit would have been District 15. I contacted former Hettinger High School’s Activities Director Kevin Morast who now works at NDHSAA and got his comments. He was not involved in the decision.
“Mandaree was placed into Region 7 by the realignment committee on the board. It was done in order to equalize out the regions around the state. Apparently,
Grant County was also considered but it would throw a wrench into Region 5 and Grant County was opposed. Mandaree gives Region 7, 13 teams and Region 8, 13 teams. In regards to the super region out of Region 7, they have decided that the top three teams will receive byes into the region tournament and the #4 seed will now have a play-in game against the #13 seed”.
He also added that the job is going well and it has been a large learning curve but a great move for him. He also keeps up with the local area through the Adams County Record.
Hettinger-Scranton’s sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:
-Dec. 5-6, Varsity Girls basketball in McLean Co. Shootout at Turtle Lake
-Dec. 5-6, Varsity wrestling at Mandan tournament
-Dec. 5, JH wrestling at Jamestown
-Dec. 5, JH girls basketball vs Lemmon at Reeder
-Dec. 8, JH girls basketball vs Harding Co. at Reeder
-Dec. 9, 11, 13, Varsity Girls basketball in Killdeer Roughrider tournament
-Dec. 11, JH boys basketball at Mott
-Dec. 11, JH girls basketball vs Mott at Reeder
-Dec. 12-13, Boys varsity basketball in Linton Shootout
See you at the games.
