I remember as a youngster growing up in Hettinger and walking downtown during the holiday season. I was probably heading for “Dales” for a .35 cent banana split or to attend a movie at the old Strand Theatre for .12 cents. But it was always nice to observe the huge decorated Christmas tree in the middle of Main Street and hear holiday music blaring thru the speakers, which I believe was originating from the KNDC radio station. It was the exclamation point to the holiday season.
I don’t know when the tradition of the tree was stopped, but am glad it resumed three years ago with the help of Jeff Hallen, Alfred Rose and Kim Markegard. When the tradition resumed the Ed Buckmier family donated the first tree and the Jake Christman family donated the 2nd tree. The 2013 and 2014 trees were purchased from Cashman Nursery. The Adams County Development Corporation and the Hettinger Chamber of Commerce covered the expense for the trees and decorations.
Picking up the tree and installing it were Jeff Hallen, Steve Turner, Alfred Rose and Stippich Inc. Decorating was accomplished by Kim Markegard, Alfred Rose and Steve Turner.
