She grew up and attended country school near there.  After graduating from Hettinger High School, Kaye attended Northern State Teacher’s College in Aberdeen, SD, for two years.  She then taught for a short time in Helena, MT, before returning to complete her four year degree in elementary education, history, psychology and sociology.  While in college, Kaye also worked full time as secretary to the dean of students.  Kaye taught in Alaska then took a position with US Department of Defense Air Force Schools, teaching in both Newfoundland and Japan. In 1964, she moved to Fargo, ND, where she met Donald Hilde.  The couple was married on August 22, 1964, and made their home in Moorhead, while Kaye taught at Washington School.  They then decided to move to the Los Angeles, CA, area and Kaye began teaching at Downey, which was NASA headquarters.  She continued there for five years until relocating to Johnstonville, CA, where she proudly taught at one of the last country schools in California.   In 1974, Kaye and Don returned to the area and made their home in Ulen.  She spent one year with Glyndon-Felton High before being offered the Special Education position at the Twin Valley Public School.  She completed additional training and received a master’s equivalent in Special Education.
