Albert Vliem “Al” was born August 5, 1924 at the family home, Lodgepole, SD to Gerrit and Jennie (Beld) Vliem. He attended Beeler School and at an early age left home and hired out to farmers in Montana and Minnesota. In October of 1944, while living in Minnesota, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the South Pacific as a B.A.R. (Browning automatic rifle carrier). After the service, Al went back to work the family farm with his brothers.
In 1947, he experienced love at first sight when he met Dorothy “Dort” Wolters who was visiting from Michigan. They were married on January 7, 1948 in Overisel, Michigan and were blessed with 67 years together. The blessing continued throughout their marriage, soon they were having children, 10 of them!! Al farmed and ranched on the land his father had homesteaded until his retirement. Besides being a farmer-rancher, he also did carpentry work with his twin brother Alf.
Singing was a big part of Al’s life. He was a member of the Holland Center Quartet for many years. He was an active member of the Holland Center Christian Reformed Church and also served on the local school board. Al enjoyed playing pool, and even had a table in the basement. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh but most of all, he loved his family.
Al passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday afternoon, January 28, 2015 with his family at his side.
