Hawks pick up BIG Region win

With the Hettinger/Scranton Nighthawks trying to stay in the top five in the Region 7 standings, the Killdeer Cowboys came into this game as the current No. 3 seed with a 6-2 record. The Nighthawks came in with a 5-3 record in the region.

With the Hettinger/Scranton Nighthawks trying to stay in the top five in the Region 7 standings, the Killdeer Cowboys came into this game as the current No. 3 seed with a 6-2 record. The Nighthawks came in with a 5-3 record in the region.

A fast start by the Nighthawks in the first quarter gave them a 21-14 lead over Killdeer early, with Sadowsky putting in eight, and Isaiah Kludt adding seven. Hettinger/Scranton then doubled their lead to 14, and at the half the scoreboard read 39-25.

Killdeer hung around and then made the ballgame close in the third and fourth quarters as the Cowboys did pull to within four before the Hawks took control and picked up a 63-47 win.  The Nighthawks were outscored 14-7 in the third quarter, but went on a 17-8 run to end the ball game with a 16 point win. Hayden Sadowsky led the way with 21 points and six steals. Brandon Pierce added 15 points, Damon Mellmer & Isaiah Kludt both added nine each, Sam Kludt had four, and Jarrett Hestekin scored one.

Nighthawks run their record to 14-3 and a 6-3 region record. Killdeer falls to 12-5 and 6-3 in the region. Next action for the Nighthawks will be a run in with the undefeated and 2nd-ranked Faith Longhorns on Friday night in Hettinger.

Next week the Hawks have Bowman County on Feb. 17 and Mott-Regent on Feb. 19.

The Nighthawks are still receiving votes in the weekly state poll, voted on by the North Dakota Sportscasters and Sportswriters.

The Nighthawk B & C Squads both picked up victories over Killdeer on Tuesday Night.

B Squad won 44-36 as they outscored Killdeer in the second quarter 15-0 to retake the lead and never look back.

Leading scorers were Jordan DIlse at nine points, Carson Schalesky and Jarad Mattis each had eigth. Thomas Maychrzak put up six, Tate Resnerand Jordan Hill each had five and Sam Kludt put up three.

The C squad picked up a 34-26 win over Killdeer. Leading the way for the Hawks was Carson Schalesky with 12. Jacob Dix added 10, Jaxon Mellmer had seven, Jordan Dilse scored three points and Jayden Conner score two.
