The girls basketball season is slowly coming to a I’m writing his week’s column early as I am heading out on Feb. 14 for Fosston, Minn., and then to Fargo for the state wrestling tournament.  Unfortunately I will miss the Region 4 individual tourney at Ft. Yates.  I’m visiting my sister, Bonnie Viken, and take in a couple of basketball games to watch my great niece and nephew play.  Kelly Viken coaches the girls team and he has a daughter who starts on the girls team and is a senior.  Les Viken, Fosston’s head football coach, has a son and starts for the boys team and is also a senior.

Here is one wrestling fan’s prediction on the Class B dual tourney at Fargo.  I got it off the Dakota Grappler web site.  He is obviously a Region 3 fan.

Round 1

Carrington over Beulah

Oakes over Bishop Ryan (BR) (closest dual of the

1st round)

Pembina Co. North (PCN) over Hettinger

Napoleon over Velva

Round 2

Carrington over Oakes

PCN over Napoleon (gotta have an upset some

where, right?)

BR over Beulah

Hettinger over Velva (closest dual of the tourna

ment)

Round 3

Carrington over PCN

Napoleon over Oakes

BR over Hettinger (because I’m a homer)

Velva over Beulah (because I’m a region 3 homer)

I was surprised to see that Lemmon defeated Flasher 67-56 on Feb. 12.  Both teams came into the game with winning records, Lemmon (9-6) and Flasher (10-5).  But none of Lemmon’s victories came against an opponent with a winning record, while Flasher had defeated Shiloh.  Shiloh has been in the North Dakota Class B top 10 poll off and on this year.

The Nighthawk varsity girls had a good game at Mandaree on Feb. 12  as they notched a 48-27 win.  Casey Joppa paced them in scoring with 16 followed by Kinsey Jahner and Lizzy Thompson with seven each.  Jahner also had a leading six rebounds.  Good luck to the girls in their regional play-in game on Feb. 20.  Location and opponent unsure of at this time.

Hettinger-Scranton’s sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:

20 Feb. 20, Girls varsity regional play-in game

Feb. 23-24 & 26, Girls Regional tournament at Trin

ity

Feb. 27, Boys varsity basketball at Beach

See you at the games.
