Nighthawks send 9 to state

This year’s Region 4 Individual Tournament was held at the Standing Rock High School on Saturday, Feb. 14.

The Nighthawks qualified nine out of 13 kids to this year’s Individual Tournament, plus qualifying for the State Dual Tournament.

Here are your placers this year: at 106, Kyle Burwick defeated the No. 4 seed, Alex Madrigal and then defeated the No. 22 seed Jeremy Leintz. Burwick and Leintz are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the state.

At 113, Cale Schalesky picked up two pins over No. 4 Brandon Snyder and No. 2 Tayt Wolding. Cale heads to state as the No. 1 wrestler in the tournament.

Chauncey Hughes came in the No. 1 seed at 120, and took care of No. 4 seed Shad Agard from Standing Rock and pinned No. 2 seed Dakota Garmann from Watford City in 1:39 for the Region Title. Chauncey will come in ranked No. 7 at the state tourney.

At 126, Carlos Martinez went 2-2 as the No. 5 seed and finished fourth at the region tournament to qualify for the state tournament. Carlos drew the No. 8 seed at the state tourney.

Alec Andress ventured in as the No.3 seed and knocked off the No. 2 seed Tyler Longland to face No. 1 seed Brenden Harrison from Standing Rock and lost 10-5 to finish second in the region tourney. Alec was placed as the No. 8 seed at state.

At 145 Logan Lochowitzer came in the No. 4 seed and finished third with a victory over Brayden Jorgenson of Bowman County. Lochowitzer will face the No. 8 seed at state.

Chet Westin came in to the 160 class as the No. 3 seed and takes home a fourth-place finish. Chet was defeated by Damian Eslinger of Beulah/Hazen for thrid. Chet drew the No. 1 seed from South Border at state.

At 195, Jacob Schalesky came in the No. 1 seed and lost in the Finals to No. 2 Seed Alex Barbion of Beulah/Hazen. Schalesky drew the No. 7 Seed at the state tournament.

And at 220, Colbey Steeke came in as the No. 2 seed and he knocked off the No. 1 seed Isaac Ripplinger by a score of 1-0. With the Region Championship, Colbey is ranked second in the state and Ripplinger is ranked third. So look for that match up in the Semifinals on Friday Night.

Other Night Hawk Wrestlers at the Region 4 tourney: Ben Dalley 1-2 and finished fifth, Ethan Anderson 0-3, Isaac Anderson 0-3 and Andrew Sulzman went 0-2. Nine Individuals head to the Individual Tourney in Fargo, and the Nighthawks dual team will wrestle in the State Dual tourney again, as the Hawks have qualified for the tournament 14 out of the 15 years. The State Tournament will be held at the Fargo Dome Feb. 19, 20 and 21, and all the action can be heard on KNDC 1490 AM and www.kndcradio.com.
