Relay team gets two top 10 finishes at State Track

The Hettinger/Scranton Nighthawks competed in the North Dakota State Track Meet on Friday, May 22, with the team having qualifiers in both individual events and relays.

The Hettinger/Scranton Nighthawks competed in the North Dakota State Track Meet on Friday, May 22, with the team having qualifiers in both individual events and relays.

Sophomore Tayor Hestekin placed ninth in the preliminary 400 meter dash and qualified for the finals. Hestekin finished seventh in the final 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.73.

Hestekin then had another seventh-place finish in the 800 meter dash.

The Nighthawks brought two relay teams to state that featured Hestekin, sophomore Brianna Robinson, junior Lizzy Thompson and freshman Molly Holt in the 1,600 meter race, and Robinson, Thompson, Hestekin, and sophomore Tayler Burwick in the 3,200 meter race.

The team competed in the 4×400 and the 4×800. They placed seventh in the 4×400 and had a fourth-place finish in the 4×800 relay.

Freshman Elizabeth Bartholmy competed in the triple jump and finished 19th with a distance of 31-09.25.

Senior Casey Joppa finished out the events for Hettinger/Scranton throwing in the javelin event. Joppa had a throw of 99-10 and finished in 13th place.

Overall there were 19 events that were scored for an overall team score. The Nighthawks were middle of the pack, accumulating 11 points for a 15th-finish. Hettinger/Scranton tied with both Northern Cass and Kindred.

Hazen took home the team championship with an overall point score of 107.5.

Head coach Kelly Pierce was unavailable for comment before the paper went to print.
