Nine hundred miles, a 14 passenger bus with no air conditioning and a fourth place finish. Hettinger/Scranton Bears finished fourth out of seven teams at the Region 5 Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament in Hazen, a tournament that started July 17 and finished on Monday July 20 with a Washburn win over Beulah to capture the region championship.

The Bears played four games and went 2-2 as they were eliminated by Hazen in the fourth game.

Hettinger/Scranton, Beulah 1, Beulah 2, Hazen, Heart River, Washburn and Bowman all congregated to compete for the regional championship.

In the first game the Bears blew out the Beulah 2 team, 10-running them in five innings. The 10-Run Rule cuts a game short if one team scores 10 or more runs against their opponent.

Mason DaFoe was the winning pitcher, and Hettinger/Scranton’s bats were very alive.

Jarred Mattis went 3 for 4 with a three runs batted in and a triple. Kyle Burwick went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and a double. Jacob Dix had four stolen bases and two walks. Mac Buchmeier had two runs batted in and went 2 for 3 with a triple. Brady Dillon went 2 for 2 with two runs batted in and scored two runs.

The final score was 13-1 after five innings.

The Bears fell to Washburn, the eventual champions, 10-4 in the second game.

Hettinger/Scranton held a 4-0 lead after four innings, but they scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth. The final score was 10-4 when the last out was recorded.

Mason DaFoe went 2 for 3 and scored a run while hitting a double. Brett Christopherson went 1 for 3 and drove in three runs.

The bats were alive again in the third game as Hettinger/Scranton dominated Bowman and won 20-2.

Jacob Dix was the winning pitcher and went 2 for 3 at the plate, driving in a run and swiping two bases. Jaxon Melter went 1 for 2 and had two walks and three runs scored. Brett Christopherson went 2 for 3 and scored three runs and drove in another. Bo Wilson went 2 for 2 with three runs batted in and scoring three runs himself. Ben Gonder went 2 for 3 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Warrick Dilse went 1 for 1 and scored a run.

The fourth, and final game for Hettinger/Scranton, was against Hazen.

The Bears were leading Hazen 6-0 going into the fourth inning. Hazen broke the shut out by putting up a run in the fourth before Hettinger/Scranton put another one on the board. Then in the fifth inning Hazen took off. Scoring three in the fifth and four in the seventh, Hettinger/Scranton was eliminated form the tournament, eventually losing to Hazen 10-8.

Since the Bears are hosting the state tournament, they receive an automatic berth in the tournament.

That tournament starts July 31 and goes through August 3.

Next year’s regional tournament will be held in Hettinger.
