My condolences to the family of Erling A. Dahl, 86, who passed away at his home in Hettinger on July 16.  Dahl took a position as high school principal in Hettinger from 1963-81, and superintendent from 1981-90.  I remembered him most as the assistant line coach when I played football.  A great mentor and instructor.

The East 9-man all star team pulled out a squeaker in the 42nd annual North Dakota Shrine Bowl by defeating the West team 38-35.  Richardton-Taylor-Hebron was well represented on the West team by Cory Rebel, Jacob Kuntz, Jaden Schmidt, Jordan Schumacher and Spencer Floberg.  Their coach Travis Olson was selected as one of the assistant coaches.  The game had a lot of offense with 73 points being scored and more than 800 yards in total offense.  The West was driving late in the game when the East recovered a fumble, the only turnover of the game, with 1:21 remaining to stop the drive.

In the 11-man game the West came out on top 16-14.

I got the baseball numbers from Larry Tibor for this summer and the Little League had nine, Midgets 12 and T-ball nine.

I talked to Chanell Walby, Bowman’s Recreation Director, at a Babe Ruth game last week and found out that Bowman’s Coed softball league has nine teams in it.  Maybe Hettinger could get a team or two in the league next year.

Summer sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:

– July 22-26, Legion Regional tourney at Surrey

– July 31 – August 3, State Babe Ruth tourney at Hettinger

See you at the games.
