Hettinger sees improved curbs along the highway

If you have walked through Hettinger lately you probably have noticed that some of the sidewalks have been under construction. The corners of the street along the highway have been redone to include a lower slope and an added yellow piece for easier grip.

If you have walked through Hettinger lately you probably have noticed that some of the sidewalks have been under construction. The corners of the street along the highway have been redone to include a lower slope and an added yellow piece for easier grip.

These construction sites, small in size but large in numbers, are all a part of a bigger project by the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

The US Hwy 12 Project starts at the South Dakota state line and extends all the way to the west side of Hettinger.

Roads will be milled, then paved with asphalt to improve the condition of the highway.

Also included in the project are ramp improvements with pavement marking to stay compliant with the American Disability Act (ADA).

According to the ADA standards, any new construction or alterations to streets, roads or highways ‘must contain curb ramps or other sloped areas at any intersection having curbs or other barriers to entry from a street level pedestrian walkway.’ It also states that ‘street level pedestrian walkways must contain curb ramps or other sloped areas at intersections to streets, roads, or highways.’

The cost of the entire project, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation is about $3.4 million.

The contractor has been working on the ramps in Hettinger for about three weeks and the rest of the ramps are expected to be finished in the next week-and-a-half.

The road repairs are expected to start around the middle to the latter part of August.
