The 2015 football season is upon us as the Nighthawks start the season with a non-region game against Wyndmere-Lidgerwood (WL) on August 22 at Shiloh. It is one of three games being played at Shiloh. The Nighthawk game starts at 10:30 a.m. MST, and after that game Hankinson takes on Mott-Regent followed by Kenmare-Bowbells versus Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter. Wyndmere and Lidgerwood are located in Southeast region of the state and they are in Region 1. Their record last year was 1-7.
I got in touch with the WL head coach and he provided me a short synopsis on his team. “Our offensive and defensive lines will be better this season because of the work the players put in during the off season. We have a great deal of experience but not as much as Hettinger-Scranton. The coach’s preseason selected us as the No. 7 team in our region.
Our goal is to make it into the playoffs. We are replacing a three-year starting quarterback with a sophomore and we graduated two very good receivers.”
I looked up New Salem-Glen Ullin’s football roster on the NDHSAA web site and they have a roster of 33 which includes 12 freshmen. They are dropping down to 9-man football after being in the 11-man ranks. They will be in Region 5 along with the Nighthawks.
The Bismarck Capitals, Midwest Plains Regional Baseball Champs, won their second game at the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series in Jamestown, N.Y., on August 17. They defeated Janesville, Wis., 7-0. In their first game of the tournament they downed the Jamestown All-Stars, 11-0, the host team of the tournament.
One of the sporting events I really like starts up this week, the Little League World Series from Williamsport, Pa. The following are the American teams:
Sweetwater Valley, Calif.; Pearland West, Texas; Wilshire-Riverside, Ore.; Webb City, Mo.; Bowling Green Eastern, Ky.; Northwood, S.C.; Red Land, Pa.; Cranston Western, R.I.
The international bracket has the Dominican Republic, Uganda, Venezuela, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Chinese Taipei.
Sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:
-August 22, Varsity football vs Wyndmere-Lidgerwood at Shiloh
– August 24, JV football vs Bowman at Scranton
-August 27, Cross Country at Killdeer
-August 28, Varsity football at Richardton-Taylor
See you at the games.
