Region 5 nine-man football teams went 3-4 in their opening games of the season.

It looks like Cavalier has another strong team as they downed Divide County 56-6.  Cavalier has won the last two 9-man state championship games.

The Nighthawks football roster has 12 freshmen on it, with four or five who will get varsity experience this year.  Total on the roster is 34, six seniors, 10 juniors and six sophomores along with the freshmen.

Stephanie Howe has doubled the amount of cross country runners from last year’s total.  There are eight girls out and five boys.

LOOKING BACK: The Richardton-Taylor Raiders and Hettinger Black Devils combined for 100 points and 1,000 yards of offense in four quarters of action.  After the smoked cleared, the Raiders walked away the winners in a 54-46 victory in nine-man action Friday in Hettinger.

Hettinger quarterback Alex Willoughby, working in place of injured starter Mike Fried, threw for 515 yards and six touchdowns.  More than three-quarters of those passing yards went to one target: senior wide receiver Jeff Smith, who caught 13 passes for 379 yards, including five touchdowns.

But those numbers were matched by the productivity of the Raiders running game, which produced 230 yards on the ground, led by Austin Aluise’s 98 yards on 14 rushes and Andrew Hauck’s 76 yards.  Richardton-Taylor quarterback Seth Forster connected on 12-of-19 attempts for 241 yards.

With the win, which ended the regular season for both teams, the Raiders finished with a 2-2 record in Region 7 and 4-4 overall.  Hettinger ends the year at 0-4 in regional competition and 2-7 overall.
