The Hettinger-Scranton Nighthawk junior varsity (JV) football team defeated Bowman’s JV team 36-18 in Scranton on August 24.

Bowman struck first as they had a good return on the opening kickoff, and a few plays later Alex Madrigal scored on a 5-yard run. It was pretty much all Nighthawks after that.

After Jaxon Mellmer intercepted a Bowman pass, Logan Lachowitzer scored first for the Nighthawks in the first quarter with a 55-yard run.  Jacob Dix added a 20-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to give Hettinger-Scranton a 14-6 lead after the first half.

Kyle Burwick added a touchdown in the third quarter for the Nighthawks and then Bowman scored the next two touchdowns on strange plays.

Hettinger-Scranton was deep in their own territory when they tried a trick play that backfired.  Nighthawk quarterback Mellmer pitched the ball to a tailback who then threw back to Mellmer, who was well covered by Brayden Jorgensen and he intercepted the pass and scored.  Later, Hettinger-Scranton was punting and the center snap was short but the kicker picked it up and had to rush his punt.  It was a short line drive just over the heads of the linemen and Bowman’s Tristen Peterson picked up the loose ball and returned it for a 40-yard touchdown.

Hudson Pierce scored the final two touchdowns of the game for Hettinger-Scranton with a nice 23-yard run up the middle, and later with a short touchdown run.

The Nighthawks defense had a nice game with just a few lapses.  Both the Nighthawks JV and Junior High teams play Beach at Beach on August 31.
