A contractor has been selected for the upcoming water rehab project on Seventh Street in Hettinger. Quam Construction was awarded the bid over two other companies that submitted proposals.

The upcoming project will stretch from Third Avenue and head north on Seventh Street all the way up to the water tower. 2,300 feet of water main and water services will be replaced. City Auditor Pat Carroll previously told the Record that aging equipment is the main reason for the replacement—this section of the city’s water system is the oldest.

Bids came in at what the engineers of Brosz Engineering had anticipated they would be.Project Engineer Billy Doerr said that since estimation have been submitted and accepted, no major changes to the project have occurred.

The contractor is planning on starting after the Labor Day weekend. Doerr said that the competition date is October 17, meaning the project will not take very long.

“This will be something that I would imagine be five to six weeks,” Doerr said.

A pre-construction has yet to take place, and finer details won’t be decided until then.

Quam Construction is no stranger to water rehabilitation projects. Currently a crew with Quam is in New England working to replace most of the cities aging water equipment. Doerr added that before the contract was awarded he spoke with references for Quam, a process he said would have happened with any one of the companies that were selected.

“I did follow up calling other engineering firms, or cities that have hired Quam Construction to work for them and got very positive reviews about them, that they are a quality contractor.”
