Memorial services for Meredith Cornell, age 79, of Carmichael, CA, formerly of Hettinger, ND, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the Centennial Chapel of the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger, ND.
Stew Stenberg will officiate with burial to follow in the Hettinger Cemetery. Meredith Cornell, born Myrtice Arlene Stenberg, March 15, 1934, passed away November 11, 2014, peacefully in her sleep in Carmichael, CA. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lillian and Ernest Stenberg; her oldest sister, Maxine Morgan; her daughter, Shari; and her oldest son, Craig.
She is survived by her brother, Erland Stenberg of Petaluma, CA; her sister, Eunice Delling (Eunice passed away March 3, 2015); her son, Blair Johnson; her son, Larry DeThury; granddaughters Alyssa and Amanda Johnson; grandson; grandson, Lance DeThury; granddaughter, Sophie DeThury.
Myrtice was born on the family farm located north of Hettinger, ND and moved to the family farm two miles south of Hettinger in 1944, where she attended Hettinger Public Schools. In August 1951, Myrtice married Floyd Johnson at the Lutheran Church in Rapid City, SD. Following her marriage she lived on the Johnson farm located south of White Butte, SD.
Her daughter, Shari, was born the next year in Aberdeen, SD. After the birth of their daughter, the Johnsons moved to San Jose, CA where Floyd joined his brothers to work at J & J Truck Lines. After arriving in San Jose, Myrtice gave birth to her son, Craig in 1953. Five years later the Johnsons had another son, Blair. Myrtice and Floyd later built their home high on the top of Canyon View Drive in Saratoga, CA.
Following her father’s death in June 1981, she dedicated her time to care of her mother who survived the death of her father. Meredith married Ivan (Tony) Cornella and lived outside of Hettinger, ND on the Cornella farm. The end of their marriage preceded Tony’s death. Following Tony’s death, she lived and worked in Bismarck, ND for several years as an executive assistant.
In the winter of 1984, she returned to her adopted home state of CA. She moved back to the San Jose area working in the Silicon Valley in the computer industry with IBM and Applied Technology.
Meredith later worked for her son, Blair at his company, A C Freight Systems in San Jose, CA. Meredith headed the Account Payable Department of A C Freight. She later moved to Sacramento to be near her other two sons, Craig and Larry. In the summer of 2007 Meredith was victimized with a stroke that hospitalized her for several weeks. When she was released from the hospital she spent a long time recovering in a facility before she was allowed to return to her home where she had 24/7 care.
She later was moved to an outpatient care facility where she again experienced a heart attack which brought her to the point of needing fulltime care. She was then moved to her own apartment in Sacramento where Joyce who provided quality full time care for Meredith until the fall of 2014 when she was admitted to Nursing Home Care at Mission Carmichael Health and Care in Carmichael, CA.
