Funeral Services for Maurice West, age 87, of Hettinger, ND, was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016 at the Hettinger Lutheran Church in Hettinger.
Pastor Kathleen Dettmann will officiate with burial to follow in the Hettinger Cemetery. Visitation was from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, followed by a gathering of family and friends at 7:00 p.m., all at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger and one hour prior to the Funeral on Tuesday morning at the Church.
Maurice Myron West passed away suddenly on Feb. 12, 2016 at West River Health Services in Hettinger with his family at his side.
Maurice was born on Jan. 14, 1929 to Floyd and Beatrice (Evans) West in Mott.
He attended Chandler township grade school and graduated from Hettinger High School in 1946. He married Phyllis Richardson on Sep. 16, 1950 in Miles City, Mont.
Maurice farmed and raised cattle on the farmstead, which his grandfather, Frank, homesteaded in 1909. They raised 3 children together: Terry, Mindy, and Ronnie. In 2013, he and Phyllis moved to Hettinger.
He was a member of Richland Lutheran Church and then, of Hettinger Lutheran Church. He served on the Chandler Township Board, the Chandler Township School Board, the Adams County Fire District Board, the Dakota Buttes Museum Board, and on the church councils of both Richland Lutheran and Hettinger Lutheran.
He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. His love of sports developed through years of playing baseball for the Chandler Township and Hettinger 1949 state championship amateur baseball teams. The beloved Chandler Township teams home field was located on the West homestead, where the pitchers mound was visible into recent years.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis, his son Terry (Barb) West, his daughter Melinda (Ken) Messer, grandsons Jeff West, Killdeer ND, James West, Coeur-dAlene, Idaho, Steven (Lindy) West, Hettinger, granddaughter Katherine West, Flagstaff, Arizona, great-granddaughter Hatti Jean West, Hettinger, 4 nieces and 2 nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, his parents Floyd and Bea West, his sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Clarence Krogh, and his son Ronald Maurice West.
