Connie Marlene Walch, age 64 of Hettinger, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.
She was born on May 2, 1951 in Hettinger, ND to Howard B. and Eleanor M. (Erickson) Walch. She grew up on the farm south of Bucyrus along with her five siblings before the family moved to Hettinger. She attended Hettinger Public Schools and graduated in the Class of 1969. Connie had many jobs throughout her life, but the one that never derailed and quickly became her life-long passion was Blondie’s Catering. She established the business in the late 1980’s and catered for special events in the area including auctions, graduations, weddings and reunions. While many in town were sleeping or enjoying holiday meals, Connie made sure the ‘Guys’ at BNSF Railroad never left hungry. She cherished the relationships she developed with all of her clients and the guys on the railroad crews she cooked for over the years.
Connie had a huge heart and a passion for serving and helping people. She volunteered many hours at the Western Horizons Care Center, was a foster parent and opened up her home to anybody who needed a place to stay. Connie was a genuine person and lived life with a free-spirited attitude and was often referred to by her friends as being “crazy fun” and this was represented in the unique Christmas presents she gave to her friends and family each year. She was always quick to smile and her laugh could be identified from across the room. Besides being warm-hearted she was also warm-blooded and was frequently seen wearing shorts in the middle of winter.
Her family and friends were important to her and she cherished the time she got to spend with everyone. She loved her nieces, nephews, and all their children as if they were her own. There are so many great memories and stories that will be cherished by all those who loved her and shared in her life.
All Connie’s close friends, relatives and “The Guys” at the BNSF Railroad are considered honorary paul bearers.
Surviving family members include her 2 brothers, 3 sister-in-laws and 1 brother-in-law, Wayne and Bonnie Walch, St. Louis, MO; Dennis and Linda Walch, Punta Gorda, FL; Arlene Walch, Hettinger, ND; Nick Schaff, Scranton, ND; and 10 nieces and nephews: Tammy and Greg Marx (St. Charles, MO), Tina Clayton (Troy, MO), Allen Schaff (Johnstown, CO), Brad and Deborah Schaff (Stone Mountain, GA), Michael Walch (Tampa, FL), Jarrett and Tara Score (Navarre, FL), Davis and Johanna Score (Tuscan, AZ), Scott and Shiloh Walch (Williston, ND), Terry and Stacy Walch (Mandan, ND), Nyle and Molly Walch (Minneapolis, MN), and 22 Great Nieces and Nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Russell, 2 sisters, Donna Schaff and Gloria Score, and sister-in-law Luella (Mattis) Walch and brother-in-law Vern Score.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Hettinger Lutheran Church with Pastor Kathleen Dettmann, officiating.
