The Hettinger-Scranton boy’s basketball season ended on a disappointing note as they lost to New England
in the quarterfinals. They started out strong with a 20-4 lead in the first quarter but could not stop the Tigers from eventually winning the game.
The Night Hawks had defeated the Tigers 66-43 during the regular season. The Night Hawks finished with a 15-7 record, the JV team went 17-5 and the ‘C’ team went 10-3.
Congratulations to Night Hawk Hayden Sadowsky for being named the senior athlete in Region 7 and also making the All-Region 7 team along with teammates Isaiah Kludt and Brandon Pierce. Nate Zachmann of Mott-Regent was named the coach of year for Region 7.
I’ve been following ND high school sports for over 50 years and Class A high school basketball had a stigma by many as being too slow and at times boring. The Class B boy’s basketball tourney has always been the crowd pleaser and money maker for the NDHSAA. But Class A basketball has been getting more run-and-gun for the last few years. This was particularly highlighted during the finals of both the Class A boys and girls championship games on March 12. Both were high scoring with teams going back and forth with lead changes. And just to throw in extra excitement both games went into overtime.
State class A champion Fargo Shanley has the 2016 ND Miss Basketball award winner in Sarah Jacobson. Her mother, Pat (Smykowski) Jacobson, won the award back in 1984 for Lidgerwood while Sara’s brother won the Mr. Basketball award in 2013.
Nolan Dix and Larry Tibor are coaching the Night Hawk high school baseball team and practice starts March 21. Coach Dix told me they could have around 22 players out. Their opening game is a non-region matchup with the Dickinson JV on April 7 at Dickinson.
Harding County (22-1) is in the SD State Class B basketball tournament at Aberdeen, March 17-19. They will face Irene-Wakonda (19-4) in their first game. Harding Co. defeated Timber Lake, 68-62, in their region championship game. The Night Hawks lost to Harding Co. on Dec. 17 by a 65-62 score. Warner is the only undefeated team in the tourney with a 23-0 record.
I contacted Jon Kohler, Hettinger High School Activities Director, if there has been any progress on bringing back the Christmas holiday basketball tourney. He informed me that they have talked about it for a few years. The problem is they can’t find teams who want to come to it.
North Dakota State will open its football season on August 27 in a home game versus Charleston Southern. It will be an ESPN televised game.
Two students from Hettinger Elementary School qualified to compete in the State Spelling Bee on March 21 in Bismarck. They are Sydney Ellingson and Patrick Schultz. Congratulations to both.
Sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:
– March 21, First day for high school baseball practice
See you at the games!
