Born to Steve and Ethel (Olson) Hanson, he grew up near Bucyrus, and graduated from Hettinger in 1959. He attended UND, and prior to completing his Bachelor’s degree in History and Mathematics in 1971, in 1967 he moved to Clio, Mich. and began teaching seventh grade math on a provisional license. Bruce’s passion soon became mathematics. He taught 30 years in Clio, retiring Jan. 1998, and then moved back to Bismarck to be closer to family. He loved his students and soon began substitute teaching and tutoring for another 16 years. One of his students wrote: “He was one of my favorite teachers. When you can make algebra interesting, you’re a natural born teacher.”

He was preceded in death by brothers Eddie, David, and Curtis; his father Steve; his mother Ethel, and stepfather George Halvorson.

He is survived by brothers Jerry (Patty) and Victor, Bismarck; sisters Cheryl Bormet, St. Louis Park, MN; Dolores Halvorson, Bismarck; Patty (Norlyn) Swenson, Bismarck; JoAnn Bennett, Temple, Texas; Cissie (Mike) Cassidy, Dickinson; foster sons Tony Bronick, Providence, RI, Scott Larock, Lapeer, MI., and many nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be given to the Church of the Cross Building Fund at 1004 E. Highland Acres Road, Bismarck, ND 58501.
