Night Hawks at StateThe 2016 State Class B Track Meet had repeat champions from 2015. New Town scored 81 points to repeat as the 2016 boys state champ and the Hazen girls defended their crown by scoring 83 points.

Forty-five girl’s teams scored points. The top five teams for the South West Region were Hettinger-Scranton and Dickinson Trinity who tied for ninth place with 26 points each. They were followed by Bowman, 17th (13 points), Grant Co./Flasher (tied for 22nd place with eight points), and Killdeer (tied for 26th place with seven points).

The Night Hawk girls team improved from 11 points in 2015 to 26 in 2016 and also jumped from 15th place to ninth place. The Night Hawk boys also improved as they did not score at all in 2015 but thanks to Sam Kludt they received five points this year.

The Des Lacs-Burlington-L&C 400-meter relay team of Donavon Lopez, Mark Medalen, Tyson Akers and Josh Knutson set a new Class B state record of 43.62. The previous record was 43.79 set by Hazen in 1999.

I did some research on the strengths of the six regions in Class B track. The North West (NW) Region garnered the most points in the boys meet this year with 222 and the South East was second with 195. Our region, South West (SW), finished third with 118.

In the girls division the South Central Region finished first with 183 points and the South East finished second with 166.5 points. The SW and NW tied for fourth with 87.
