Eye on southwest ND sports

Dickinson won the 2016 Class A baseball championship with a 8-1 win over West Fargo Sheyenne. Thompson won the Class B crown by downing Beulah 3-2 in the championship game.

Sheldon COLUMN BOXAfter watching the Legion baseball team I believe they can have a successful season, and hopefully post a winning record. Pitching has always been a question mark with a lack of depth and inconsistency in throwing strikes. But with Brett Christopherson having some recent success to go along with Brandon Pierce, Damon Mellmer and Jarad Mattis, the depth is there. Plus coach Nolan Dix informed me that Braxton Yates may, mind you may, be able to come back later in the season. He was developing as a solid pitcher last year but hurt his knee in the football season. Their hitting and defense must also improve, but they are still relatively a young team.

I talked to Coach Pitch and Little League coach Paul Jamison and he feels good about this years teams. Both teams have around 13-15 players and their games start on June 9. The season ending Coach Pitch tourney is scheduled for July 12 at Bowman and the Little League tourney is scheduled for July 20-21 in Hettinger.

LOOKING BACK: The Scranton team won the Bowman Little League Tournament on July 28 and 29, 2010. Members of the team were Abraham Musonda, Callie Miller, Bo Wilson, Riley Jenson, Jaxon Mellmer, Seth Ehlers, Hudson Pierce, Thomas Maychrzak, Brandon Pierce, Damon Mellmer, Logan Mollman, Jordan Dilse and Seth Olson. The coaches were Larry Tibor and Deidre Mack.

Sports schedule for the coming week is as follows:

• June 9, Coach Pitch and Little League at Lemmon

• June 9, Legion Baseball at Garrison

• June 11, Legion Baseball at vs Makoti at Killdeer

• June 12, Babe Ruth Baseball at Belfield

• June 14, Coach Pitch and Little League at Buffalo

• June 15, Legion Baseball vs Surrey at Hettinger
