Phillip Ketterling, Jr., 83

Phillip Ketterling, Jr., formerly of Hettinger, son of Phillip Sr. and Julia (Krischenowski) Ketterling, died peacefully May 9, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa, from complication following cancer surgery at the age of 83 years.

Phil graduated from Hettinger High School in 1950 and entered the United States Navy serving his country during the Korean conflict. Upon his discharge he worked at Halvorson’s Grocery. He met Irene Jung and they were married June 19, 1955. To this union four children, Brad, Vic, Sheri and Sandra were born.

In 1967 Phil and Irene moved their family to Des Moines. Phil worked as a produce manager for Dahl’s Grocery. Later he worked several years at Massey Ferguson in the assembly line and then in maintenance for the West Des Moines school district, retiring in 1989.

Phil was a member of the Cumming American Legion Post 562. He enjoyed working in his garden, hunting, fishing, watching sports, (especially the Green Bay Packers) and traveling with his wife.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter and William. He is survived by his wife, of nearly 61 years, Norwalk, IA, children Brad, Des Moines; Vic, Norwalk; Sheri (Lee) Sharp, Maxwell, IA; Sandra (David) Anderson, Squaw Valley, CA. Six grandchildren: Aleasha, Josh, Lisa, Lindsey, Trevor (Amanda), and Matthew and seven siblings: Lorraine (John) Hall, Viola Gilbert, Richard (Betty), Hilda Banning, Maybelle Borgrud, Esther (Roger) Anderson and Wesley (Arlys).
