Babe Ruthers take 2 from Bowman

Wishing everyone a great and safe 4th of July.

Sheldon COLUMN BOXKyle Burwick was one of the wrestlers on the ND Blue team that competed in the 2016 Junior Duals Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournament this past week in Tulsa, OK.  He did well as he went 6-3 in the Freestyle portion and the team finished 3rd in the Bronze/Copper pool with an overall record of 5-4.  They defeated Louisiana, Georgia, Arizona, Iowa-Blue and Utah-Blue.
In the Greco-Roman division Burwick finished 3-3 and the team went 5-3.
As of right now it looks like Bowman and Mott-Regent-New England will be bumped up to 11-man football for the 2017-18 seasons.  New England starts co-oping with Mott-Regent this year.
Every two years the North Dakota High School Activities Association adjusts the football enrollment numbers.  According to Justin Fletschock, Assistant Director, NDHSAA; “The enrollment numbers are set and will not change.  Schools can petition up a division, but the only way someone can move down a division is if someone petitions up.  Mott-Regent-New England would be the first school to be able to move down if someone below them opts up.  No one has officially opted up, but they have until September 30, 2016 to do so.”
For the 2017-18 seasons there will be three divisions of 11-man, 24 in AAA, 10 in AA and 32 in A.  The remaining 45 teams will be 9-man.
A couple of the “Most Memorable Moments” from 2015-16 from the NDHSAA web site.  Fargo Shanley’s girls basketball team rewrote the record books in the 2015-16 season by winning its third straight NDHSAA Class A state championship.  They finished the season 27-0, the team’s second straight undefeated season.  By beating Bismarck Century in the championship game they extended their winning streak to 70-games, which is a modern day record since girls basketball became a NDHSAA sponsored sport in 1974.
Also, Maple Valley girls basketball standout Rylee Nudell became the state’s and Class B’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder.  Nudell, a North Dakota State signee, wrapped up her career scoring with 3,458 points and grabbing 1,761 rebounds.  The previous Class B and state scoring record was held by Tanya Fischer of Bowman (1989-1993) and the previous Class B and overall state record for rebounding was held by Midway-Fordville-Lankin’s Kami Winger (1990-94).
