Dan’s ashes will be buried at the Hettinger Cemetery at a later date.

Daniel James Nudell was born July 11, 1956 to Donna (Sletmoe) and Larry Nudell in Fargo, ND. He grew up in Valley City, Turtle Lake, Carrington and Harvey ND, graduating from Harvey High School in 1974.

He attended North Dakota State University. There he met Linda Bliss from Scranton, ND. They married in 1979. They lived in Mayville, Fargo and Horace ND before settling in Hettinger for 27 years.

Matthew was born in 1983. The look on Dans face when he first held that baby was priceless! That same look was there when Jean was born in 1989.

Dan finished his bachelors degree in Animal Science at NDSU in 1986. This led to a dream job as the sheep development coordinator in Hettinger. He liked nothing more than farm/ranch visits and meetings with producers. He returned to NDSU for a masters degree in agricultural economics and continued to work for NDSU as a researcher until 2012.

Dan believed in hard work. Besides his work for NDSU, he also did construction, worked as a department manager for Target store in Fargo, and as a contractor. He was proud to be co-manager of the Hettinger Theater for two years, and to drive the train for United Grain Corp.

In 2015 he accepted the position as Environmental Services Manager for West River Health Services. He was able to use his varied skills and was disappointed that time there was cut short. He loved his co-workers and the challenges of the position.

Dan was a dedicated community leader. He served on the Hettinger city council, as the mayor, on the economic development committee and the housing authority. He was a member of Hettinger Lutheran, where he contributed by doing jobs mostly behind the scenes, and entertaining Pat and Pastor Kate.

Dan was a loyal friend to many of all ages and walks of life. He was an exceptional husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and son-in-law.

Dan loved southwest North Dakota, since his first hunting trips with his dad and grandpa as a boy. He planted many trees, raised horses, calves and chickens. After years of planning, he had started to build a dream house in the country to share with his wife. He wanted to live out many more years on the prairie, under the big open sky he loved so much. He wanted to teach his grandkids all about living on the prairie.

Dan is survived by his wife, Linda; his son Matthew and daughter-in-law Amy of Gambrills MD and his daughter Jean of Hettinger; his grandchildren Lucas, Emma and Cora Nudell; his sisters and brothers-in-law Nancy and Dale Such of Fremont, CA and Barbara and Doug Whelan of Grafton ND; his sisters-in-law and their husbands: Jolyn Bliss, Dickinson ND; Brenda and Dennis Schaible, Minot, ND; Dianne and Tony Pierce, Scranton, ND; and Loretta and Elroy Sperle, Savage, MN.

He is also survived by his nephews and nieces: Kelsey, Grace, Krista, Derek, Rachelle, Andrea, Chelsea, Mallorie, Nathan, Brandon, Kyle and Kevin, and their families.

He leaves behind many friends and coworkers who will also miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother-in-law Lyle Bliss, aunts Lea Hammerschmidt and Char Nudell.
