Mary Joan (Halvorson) Chalcraft was born on Sept. 28, 1933 in New Salem, North Dakota to Chris and Agnes (Aymond) Halvorson.
Mary Joan (Halvorson) Chalcraft was born on Sept. 28, 1933 in New Salem, North Dakota to Chris and Agnes (Aymond) Halvorson. She was baptized on Oct. 14, 1933 at St. Mary’s Queen of Peace Church in Almont, N.D. She attended school in Almont through the 6th grade. Her parents then moved to Hettinger where Mary Joan graduated from Hettinger High School in 1951. Following her graduation, she attended St. Catherines Catholic College in St. Paul, Minn. graduating in 1955. She then began her teaching career in Mankato, Minn. She married Floyd Chalcraft on Dec. 27, 1955 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hettinger, N.D. They welcomed six children into their family over the years. Mary Joan worked as a bookkeeper and store manager at the Super Valu and Ben Franklin stores in Hettinger. She was active in the community through her involvement in the Chamber of Commerce, Cowboy Band, Hospice and the Hettinger Hospital. She retired in 1999 to spend time with her husband and travel. Mary Joan moved with her husband to Mesa, Ariz. in 2007.
Mary Joan deeply loved family and the time she spent with them. She had such an open heart that welcomed and accepted each new member into the family. She planned numerous family gatherings creating many precious memories.
Mary Joan had a very strong belief in the Catholic faith. She was active in each of the parishes she was a member of. Her involvement over the years included serving in Altar Society, singing in the choir, playing organ, and working in the music ministry. She was also active in several bible studies and prayer groups. Her church family was a very important part of her life.
Mary Joan loved music, travel, family, friends and living. She was positive, encouraging, kind-hearted, generous, accepting and loving. She touched many people’s lives and will be greatly missed. Mary Joan passed from this life on Saturday July 23, 2016 at the age of 82.
Surviving family members include her husband, Floyd, Mesa, Ariz.; children, Mark, Gilbert, Ariz.; Larry (Lisa), Bismarck, ND; Cathy (Del) Kastner, Fargo; Margaret, Estes Park, Colo. Teresa, Ft. Collins, Colo.; grandchildren, Britani (Alex) Scott, Coventry, England; Aaron Chalcraft, Gilbert, Colo., Hollie (Angel) Hernandez , Tucson, Ariz.; Mathew Chalcraft, Cleveland, Tenn.; Stephanie ( Andy) Fuchs, Duluth, Minn.; Allison Chalcraft, Duluth, Minn.; Eric (Leah) Kastner, Fargo, N.D.; Sarah Kastner, Park River, N.D.; Chris (Kayla) Kastner, Grafton, N.D.; Rebecca (Stuart Mann) Kastner, Deerfield, Kans.; great-grand children, Leo, Milo, Benjamin, Azariah, Noah, Eli; and sister-in-law Shirley Halvorson, Mott, N.D.
She was preceded in death by a son, John; brother, Richard, and her parents.
Funeral service will be Aug. 5, 10:30 a.m. at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, 801 1st St SE in Mandan, N.D. Burial in the Veteran’s Cemetary following the funeral service. Luncheon at Spirit of Life Church to follow.
