U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today announced additional federal funding of up to $185 million has been made available for farmers in the form of direct and guaranteed farm operating loans made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA).

“North Dakota’s farmers and ranchers wake up every morning and do their jobs to feed the world- even when the going gets tough,” said Heitkamp. “The Farm Service Agency plays a critical role in making sure our producers receive the support they need in such downturns, and Aaron Krauter and his team in North Dakota are doing a great job of making sure our state’s farmers and ranchers have the resources they need. The additional Farm Service Agency operating loan funding will help our farmers and ranchers acquire the support they need to continue to feed our state and the world.”

The FSA supports farmers and ranchers by implementing programs authorized in the Farm Bill like the farm operating loans program that received the additional revenue. Lower commodity prices have put added strain on the agricultural industry and has created increased demand for operating loans that will keep farmers and ranchers pushing forward.

Heitkamp has been strong advocate for North Dakota’s farmers and ranchers and has consistently been in contact with North Dakota’s FSA Executive Director, Aaron Krauter, who plays a critical role in making sure farmers and ranchers have the financial resources to continue operation despite the market conditions. Recently, Heitkamp traveled throughout North Dakota in a two day Farm Bill tour, meeting with local producers at the North Dakota’s Farmers Union where she discussed the importance of crop insurance as an important component of the Farm Bill.
