Western Horizons Assisted Living Center, your local assisted living center in north Hettinger, celebrated National Assisted Living Week, Sept. 11-17, with a “Rockin’ 50s” theme. The center was decorated with 50s records, a jukebox, and diner memorabilia! You knew they were rockin’ the minute you stepped inside the facility.
Established by the National Center for Assisted Living in 1995, National Assisted Living Week provides a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers and the surrounding communities to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors. The annual observance encourages assisted living communities around the country to celebrate the individuals they serve and to educate the public about long term care. Your local Western Horizons Living Center staff did just that and then some!
On Sunday, Sept. 11, the tenants celebrated Grandparents Day by bringing out pictures of their grandchildren and great grandchildren. All of the tenants participated by sharing their pictures of loved ones amongst each other. Thereafter, the Holland Center Church members arrived with song and celebration for the tenants.
On Monday, Sept. 12, Elvis music was playing all day long throughout the Center, with 50s trivia to boot. At coffee hour, the tenants enjoyed Elvis’s favorite snack – peanut butter and banana sandwiches! Mmmmmmm!
On Tuesday, Sept. 13, a “Rise & Shine” pancake and sausage breakfast was prepared and served to the tenants by the staff. We heard it was amazing!
On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the staff led all of the tenants in a surprise activity – making homemade aprons. We’re not sure if many of the men partook in this activity, but we’re certain they enjoyed the old fashioned malts afterwards! As did everyone in attendance.
On Thursday, Sept. 15, the tenants were asked to “dress up” in 50s regalia if they chose – then enjoy a “drive up” supper (weather permitting) of hot dogs, French fries and an ice cold soda. The congenial staff were not on roller skates, but they did their best to serve the hungry tenants a terrific meal.
Lastly, on Friday, Sept. 16, each of the tenants enjoyed fresh popcorn in the TV Room while watching the movie “Grease.” Nothing quite like a little John Travolta and Olivia Newton John!
What a wonderful rockin’ week at Western Horizons Assisted Living! Special thanks to Diane Henderson and her crew, especially Kira, for developing and carrying out such a fun week for their tenants. They certainly celebrated the residents they serve.
