Eye on southwest ND sports

Of all games to miss I missed the Night Hawk/Heart River volley ball match on Sept. 15.

Sheldon COLUMN BOXOf all games to miss I missed the Night Hawk/Heart River volley ball match on Sept. 15.  Heart River came into the contest with an overall 7-0 record according to the NDHSAA web site and had downed the Night Hawks the past two years, both by 3-0.  Heart River took the first match easily but the Night Hawks came back to take the contest 3-2.  I talked to John Kludt, and he told me the Scranton gym was rocking as the young ladies came back from the initial match to pull out the win.   Another big game is coming on Sept. 27 with Hazen.  Hazen had been undefeated in region play along with Trinity and the Night Hawks.  But Trinity got by Hazen in five sets on Sept. 20.  The Titans won the first set 25-22 before Hazen won the next two sets  25-17 and 25-23. Trinity came back with scores of 25-14 and 15-13 to win.

Region 5 football scores from Sept. 16 were Hettinger-Scranton 40, Grant Co. 16; New Salem-Glen Ullin 60, Beach 12; and the upset of Bowman Co. 26 over Richardton-TH 20.  RTH will lose their tie-breaker advantage over the Night Hawks if the Night Hawks were to win their remaining three games.

Penalties and not being able to convert more consistently on extra point attempts after touchdowns have been a weak point for the Night Hawk football team.

Former NDSU and Bismarck Century quarterback Carson Wenz and his Philadelphia Eagles team won their second game of the season and are now 2-0.

Former Beach football player and current NDSU lineman Landon Lechler was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference offensive lineman of the week.
