Service of Remembrance for Virginia Walby, 90, of Hettinger was Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger.  Rev. Richard Wyman will officiate and burial will follow at the Hettinger Cemetery.  Visitation was from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23 at the Centennial Chapel.

Virgina passed away at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger, ND on Friday, Oct., 21, 2016.

Virginia Fitch was born in Regent, N.D. on April 15, 1926 to Lowell and Marie (Haskins) Fitch, grew up in Hettinger and lived there her entire life. She was a star at the young age of 11, leading the Hettinger Cowboy Band as one of the first drum majorettes in the state. The Bismarck Tribune in 1939 said, “Virginia is a remarkable little girl and she twirls a baton with the speed and dexterity of a Big Ten drum major.”  Virginia graduated Hettinger High School then attended Macalaster College, St. Paul, Minn. and graduated from North Dakota State University.

She never outgrew her passion to take part in band performances and did so into her 80s. She also excelled at another talent – being a fantastic and very patient mother of the “Walby Kids”; Sandra, Jeff and Danny.

She always had a wise observation or a great joke at the ready. She was patient, kind, generous and funny. All things we her family will miss so very much. Mom was a painfully loyal fan of the Minnesota Vikings and we’re sure she’ll do what she can to help them win a Super Bowl victory this season.

Virginia also had a number of close friends, wonderful nieces and a great caring staff at Western Horizons. They were with her to the end of her path here on Earth. We all know her strong faith will take her spirit to touch someone else the way she touched our lives.

We will miss you our friend, aunt, grandma and mom. ‘til we meet again, Sweet Virginia……  She was preceded by parents: Lowell and Maree Fitch, sister Jean Shapland and husband of 50 years Lyle Walby.

She is survived by children: son Jeff Walby, daughter Sandra Quick (Jon) and son Dan Walby (Kate)

Grandchildren: Jackson Quick, LeAnna Harrison (Drew), Zoe Walby and Declan Walby and Great grandchildren: Kal and Ava Harrison.

Condolences to the Walby family can be sent through our website at www.evansonjensenfuneralhome.com
