For The Record

The Night Hawk boy’s basketball team picked up two Region 7 victories this past week.  On Feb. 3 they defeated Glen Ullin-Hebron at Glen Ullin in a tight contest, 55-53.  Instead of trailing at the beginning of the game, the Night Hawks were winning 31-22 at the half as Jerad Mattis connected on five 3-pointers and had 19 points in the first half.

The Bearcats came back in the third quarter and outscored the Night Hawks 23-16 to pull within two points.  The Night Hawks were down by one late in the game when Isaiah Kludt’s driving layup with 23 seconds left put the Night Hawks up by one.  Mattis later added a free throw for the two point win.  Ethan Dupper added three treys for the game.

Up next, on Feb. 7, were the Killdeer Cowboys in a game at Scranton.  The Cowboys came into the game with a 3-3 region record and 7-8 overall, but did not look like a .500 team.  Their inside game of 6-foot-2 Dawson Schmeling, 6-foot-4 Garrett LeMieux and 6-foot-5 Alex Sadowsky were controlling the boards and scoring.  The trio had a combined point total of 29 points in the first half to lead the Cowboys to a 40-38 lead at the half.  All three are juniors.

The second half was a different story as the Night Hawks turned up the heat and pressured the Cowboys causing 14 turnovers in the half.  The Cowboys only had eight in the first half.  The Cowboys inside game was neutralized and the speed and pressure of the Night Hawks took over the game.  The Night Hawks outscored the Cowboys 40-21 in the second half.

Leading the way for the Night Hawks were Kludt 21, Mattis 17, Jaxon Mellmer 13, and Carson Schalesky 12.  The Cowboys were lead by Sadowsky 14, LeMieux 13, and Schmeling 12.

The Night Hawks record improved to 5-2 in region play and 12-4 overall.

The Night Hawk Junior Varsity team also defeated the Cowboy JV team by a score of 60-52.  Jeran Anderson had a nice game with 22 points and led in rebounding.  Dupper added 12 and Brady Dillon 11.  Kadin Nodand paced the Cowboys with 15 points.
