George W. Bjerke, 82 of Lakewood, Colo. died March 16, 2017 at home, following a battle with cancer. A family service was held Friday, March 24 at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home.

George W. Bjerke, 82 of Lakewood, Colo. died March 16, 2017 at home, following a battle with cancer. A family service was held Friday, March 24 at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home.

George was born on Feb. 22, 1935 to Olaf and Alma Bjerke at home in Ralph, S.D. He graduated from Hettinger Public School in 1954 and continued on to Black Hills State. Afterwards he attended Black Hills School of Mines in Rapid City, S.D., graduating with an Engineering degree. During this time, he served in the National Guard. He then went to work as a Civil Engineer for the Soil Conservation Service until retirement in 1994.

He was married to Jane A. Snyder on Aug. 17, 1958 at the Hettinger Lutheran Church. They continued to live in Hettinger until 1961. They then moved to Oregon for the next six years. In 1967, George was transferred to Lakewood, Colo. where he lived for 50 years. George enjoyed playing tennis and golf for many years. He loved to read, watch sports, camp and fish.

He is survived by his son Kevin Bjerke of Tucson, Ariz. daughter and son-in-law Sandy and Oran Jacobs of Rapid City, son and daughter-in-law David and Keli Bjerke of Lakewood, Colo., grandchildren Brittany Bjerke, Lyndsey Jacobs, Eric Jacobs, DJ Bjerke, Tanner Bjerke, and Reannah Bjerke, Brothers Orin (Helen, sister-in-law), Buddy, and Ivan (Janice, sister-in-law), sisters Delilah Hanson, Lorraine Gunderson and June Drolc, brother-in-laws Mike Ellefson and Cecil Braddack, and his beloved dog Gege.

He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Oriville, Gordon, and Paul, sisters Myrtle Kvanvig, Marian Botts, and Marvel Braddock.
