Night Hawks take down No. 1 Beulah

The Night Hawk baseball team had another big victory this season as they knocked off Beulah  3-1, who was previously undefeated in region play.

For The Record

Beulah, Hazen and Shiloh have been the traditional powers in Region 8 the past few years and the Night Hawks have been unable to defeat them.  They have now defeated each of them once this year.

It was quite a pitching duel between Night Hawk Mason Defoe and Beulah’s Mason Dolbec.  The Night Hawks scored first with a run in the second inning when Hudson Pierce reached first base on a hit by a pitch.  He would later score on a ground ball by Kyle Burwick after reaching third on a stolen base and a wild pitch.

Defoe was pitching in spurts as in the first three innings he would retire the first two batters and then get in trouble with walks but never allowed a run.  It was close in the second inning when after two outs he walked a batter and hit another one.  Up stepped Beulah’s lead-off hitter who lined a fairly deep shot to dead center field but Warrick Dilse was there for the catch and the third out.  Defoe came back to set down the Beulah hitters in order in the fourth through sixth innings including striking out the side in the fourth.  He helped himself out in the sixth by picking off a runner at first base who had just received a walk.

Meanwhile, Dolbec was cruising through the first five innings with a one-hitter getting nine of the 15 outs on ground ball outs.  The Night Hawks came alive in the bottom of the sixth with two insurance runs.  Defoe led off the inning with a double,  Jarad Mattis then walked and each would score on successive base hits by Pierce and Bo Wilson.

But Beulah wasn’t done as they scored their lone run and had a runner on second with only one out in the top of the seventh.  Defoe would get the final two outs on a fly ball to center and a strikeout.  He finished with a two-hitter, walking six and striking out seven.

Dolbec would finish with a four-hitter, walking two and striking out four.
