Eye on southwest ND sports

The Night Hawk baseball team finished out the season with a 7-6 loss Washburn/Wilton/Center on May 16 and then won two against Heart River by scores of 16-6 and 14-2 on May 18.

The first game was a continuation of a rained out game at Hettinger on May 9.

Five of the six teams in Region 8 baseball finished .500 or better in regular-season region play with only two games separating the first-place and fifth-place teams.  Beulah earned the No. 1 seed for the Region 8 tournament in Washburn with a 7-3 record.  Hettinger-Scranton-New England, Hazen and Shiloh Christian all finished with 6-4 records.  Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton (WWCS) compiled a 5-5 record, and Heart River finished 0-10 in their inaugural high school season.  The Night Hawks had the best run differential in games played against Hazen and Shiloh, giving them the tournament’s No. 2 seed.  Hazen owned the tie-breaker over Shiloh for the No. 3 seed.

The May 18 edition of the Dickinson Press had an excellent article on the Night Hawk girls track team with Taylor Hestekin the primary point of the article.  Hestekin set Southwest Track Meet records in the 400 and 800 meters.  She won the 400 in 1:00.41, besting the 2014 record of 1:00.56, set by Trinity’s Katelyn Grinsteinner.  In the 800, Hestekin won in 2:26.55, a time which also topped Grinsteinner’s 2013 record of 2:26.90.  She has signed to run at the University of Mary year next year.
