Alfred Rose Jr., 75

Alfred Rose Jr.

Alfred O. Rose Jr., age 75 of Hettinger, passed from this life on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.
Alfred was born on Nov. 16, 1941, the youngest of three children born to Alfred O. Sr. and Lena (Vigoren) Rose. He grew up on a farm west of Hettinger and attended school in Hettinger graduating with the Class of 1959. Alfred attended a business college in Rapid City. He was united in marriage to Barbara Davidson on Feb. 22, 1960.
Alfred’s love of farming continued throughout his lifetime. He and his wife bought the Schmaltz farm in 1963. As Alfred’s passion for farming continued he added more acres at every opportunity which eventually included the addition of his dad’s family farm and Barbara’s family farm. He specialized in growing small grains but was progressive in trying new innovations throughout his career. Harvest and driving combine was definitely the most beloved time of the year.
The only things in life that could rival the huge grin Alfred got from an over flowing combine hopper would be the smiles brought to him by Barbara, his daughters and grandchildren. The purchase of his first airplane, and having the ability to spray his own crops was a hobby that quickly grew. The discussion of the plane always brought a sense of passion and excitement into his voice.
Alfred was a leader and active in local and state organizations including Chairman of Hettinger Township, a 4-H Leader, President of the Board of Hettinger Lutheran Church, and was on the Hettinger Golf Course Board. He was a member of the Adams County Development Corp, North Dakota Wheat Commission and North Dakota Sunflower Council. He was a founding member of the Western Pork Cooperative.
Alfred was a caregiver to his parents and his in-laws. He showed kindness and respect to all, and was quick to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends during times of need. Some things Alfred enjoyed was his morning and afternoon coffee in town, and golfing. Some of his highlights in his life were visiting his grandchildren, and watching their accomplishments that would bring a “twinkle to his eyes and his unassuming wry smile to his lips”.
Surviving family members include his wife, Barbara, Hettinger; three daughters and sons-in-law, O Detta and Rick Manthei; Shelly Rose and Leon Luttschwager; Audra Rose and Thomas Jacobson; grandchildren, KyLee and Kalen Manthei; Morgan and Amanda Rose, Erik Jacobson, one brother and sister-in-law, Darwin and Jan Rose, Billings, Mont.; and in-laws, Gary and Diana Davidson, Lyle Davidson, and Patsy and Dan Hove.
