Funeral services to celebrate the life of Renee K. Nelson, 80, a resident of Davenport, were held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street, Davenport. Her family greeted friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the church. Following services, cremation rites were accorded and her cremains will be laid to rest in the St. Paul Memorial Garden at a later date. Renee passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Genesis West Medical Center, Davenport.

Renee Kathleen Johnson was born on March 28, 1937 in Hettinger, North Dakota, a daughter of Alfred Oliver and Blanche Lenora (Larson) Johnson. She was united in marriage to Jerald N. “Jerry” Nelson on May 12, 1958 at Bucyrus Lutheran Church in Bucyrus, North Dakota. They have shared over 59 years of marriage and many more years of memories, having known each other since grade school.
Renee worked for many years at Harrison Elementary as a teacher’s aide and as an administrative assistant.
She was an exceptional seamstress. She loved quilting and embroidery work, and sewed many quilt squares for the quilt program at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Renee made a lot of her children’s clothing when they were young and dresses for her daughters’ school dances when they were teenagers. She never quit learning new sewing techniques and skills. Renee was an excellent cook and was known for her Christmas soups. She also enjoyed running, having completed 5 marathons, and was a former member of the Cornbelt Running Club. Renee cherished spending time with family and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was always willing to do her part by being a multiple gallon blood donor, as well as donating her “sparkling blue eyes” after her passing.
Renee is survived by her loving husband, Jerry, Davenport; children and their spouses: Doug (Amy) Nelson, Plano, Texas, Dianne (Dana) Nelson-Taylor, Davenport, Rhonda (Steve) King, Marion, Iowa, and Lisa (Bob) Horton, Coal Valley, Illinois, grandchildren: Jeremy (fiancé, Ashley) Nelson, Allison (Eric) Sylvester, Amy Taylor, Tanner King, Larissa Horton, Zacchary Nelson, CiCi Nelson, Linnea Horton, and Shawn (Maria) Taylor; great-grandchildren: Trevor and Abby Clain, and Ivy Sylvester; brothers: Alton (Marlene) Johnson, Montana, Robert (Sandy) Johnson, Arkansas, Harlan (Gae) Johnson, Arizona, Ted (Shari) Johnson, North Dakota.; and a sister, Rosemary (Don) Oberlander, South Dakota, and many nieces and nephews.
