Ethelyn Marthaller

Mass of Christian burial for Ethelyn Marthaller, age 90 of Hettinger, was Saturday Aug. 19, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic church in Hettinger.  Burial followed at the Hettinger Cemetery. Visitation was one hour prior to Mass on Saturday at the church.

Ethelyn passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017 at the Western Horizons Care Center in Hettinger. She was born on the family farm south of Mott to Keith and Carrie (Campbell) Remington as the second of eight kids. She graduated from Mott High School and attended Dickinson State Teachers College for a short time and had always wished she could have gone longer.

She married Milton Marthaller on Sept. 29, 1947 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott.  They lived in Mott for several years and then moved to Hettinger in 1956.   

She worked at the Hettinger Hospital, and along with Milton, operated Milt’s Sewing Center in Hettinger.  She was an accomplished seamstress and assisted customers with their sewing supplies and knitting supplies at the store on Main Street.     

She helped raise her five kids and always had an open door to their friends.

She was a Cub Scout leader for several years with Den meetings at her home.

She remembered the ‘Dirty Thirties’ well and always had a soft heart for anyone who was poor and didn’t have much.

She is survived by her two sons Duey (Char) Mandan, Ron (Judy) Big Lake, Minn., and her daughter Beverly (Mike) Hansberry, Edina, Minn., son-in-law Gale Hofland California, and her brother Darrell Remington, Mott, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Milton, her daughter Terryl Ann Hofland, son Dennis Keith Marthaller and one great grandchild.  Also preceded in death by her brothers Kenneth, Wallace, Robert (Bud) Remington and sisters Grace Fulton, Edith Kilzer, and Arlene Heinzman.
