After opening the season with an impressive victory over the Lemmon Cowboys the Central McLean Cougars came to town and defeated the Hettinger-Scranton Night Hawks by a 46-34 score on August 25.
The Night Hawks struck first when Isaiah Kludt ran 45 yards to pay dirt on a fourth and three play in the first quarter. The two-point conversion was successful as Jaxon Mellmer found Kyle Burwick open in the end zone. Both teams scored twice in the second quarter. Jacob Dix on a five yard run and Mellmer from two yards out for the Night Hawks that put the Night Hawks up 20-14 at half time.
It was a different story in the second half as Cougar Trey Klain took the opening kickoff all the way. Six plays later the Night Hawks would quickly take the lead back as Mellmer connected with Burwick for a short TD pass. But that would be all the Night Hawk scoring in the third quarter while the Cougars scored two more times as the Cougars running game was in high gear led by Kayden Hornberger and Klain. Both teams would score once in the fourth quarter.
First half statistics were close as the Night Hawks rushed for 147 yards, passed for 77 and had eleven first downs. The Cougars rushed for 135 yards, passed for 72 with nine first downs. The Cougars ended up 398 yards rushing for the game and 24 total first downs. Total yards went to the Cougars 470 to the Night Hawks 435. Kludt led the Night Hawks with 169 rushing and Mellmer was 13-22 for 180 yards in the passing department. Hornberger rushed for 162 to lead the Cougars.
