Eye on South West ND Sports

Central McLean’s victory over the Night Hawks really caught me off guard as their team looked a lot better than I would have thought. They are new to Region 5 and the main reason I picked them sixth was based on last season’s 2-6 record in Region 3. I also did not have access to their roster since it had not been posted on the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) web site at the time I did my prediction. I just got my copy of the 2017 publication “Pigskin” and Central McLean was ranked fifth in both the coach’s poll and the Pigskin poll.

For the Record

Speaking about the Pigskin, I was surprised that the Pigskin poll had New Salem-Almont-Glen Ullin rated #one in the region with Shiloh rated #3. The coach’s poll has Shiloh #1. The Night Hawks were rated #4 in both polls.

Other Region 5 scores were New Salem-Almont-Glen Ullin over Mott-Regent/New England 28-6; Beach defeated Richardton-Taylor-Hebron 28-14; Shiloh downed Grant Co. 50-16.

The Night Hawk volleyball team did well in the Killdeer Mountain Tournament on August 26.

The Night Hawk Junior High football team lost their opening game to Beach on August 28.

I watched most of the Hettinger-Scranton vs Baker elementary football game on August 26. When I got there the score was tied at seven apiece. In the 2nd half quarterback Chason Schumacher handed off to Hayden DeFoe who scooted around end and headed for the corner and scored what turned out to be the winning TD. Young Night Hawks win 14-7. They had earlier lost their first game of the season to Beach on August 22 by a 34-6 score.

After losing 51-6 to the Night Hawks the Lemmon Cowboys lost their August 25 game to Harding County by a score of 44-12. Both Harding Co. and Bison are currently 2-0 but meet each other on Sept. 1 at Bison.
