I failed to provide my congratulations in last week’s column to Ted Uecker III on being inducted into the Black Devils Hall of Fame. He was a four-year letterman in football, basketball, and track. He was also a pitcher and shortstop for the Post #115 American Legion baseball team. His class was loaded with athletic talent which included Bill Butterfield and my oldest nephew Les Viken. I was stationed at Minot AFB at the time and spent as many weekends that I could in making the drive to Hettinger for the games.
For the Record
In Region 5 football action on Sept. 29, Beach downed Grant Co.-Flasher 30-14, Mott-Regent/New England hammered Central McLean 44-6, Shiloh defeated Richardton-Taylor-Hebron (RTH) 42-20 to stay undefeated, and New Salem/Glen Ullin (NS/GU) remained undefeated with a 62-26 win over the Night Hawks.
This sets up a final week to determine playoff positions and seeding. Both Shiloh and NS/GU are undefeated and will meet on Oct. 6 at Shiloh to determine 1st and 2nd place in the region as well as seeding for the playoffs. The winner of this game will have a first round bye while the loser will face the #4 seed out of Region 6 which will be either Ray/Powers Lake or Surrey.
Beach takes on Central McLean and a Beach victory assures them as the #3 seed. Even if they lose they will still be seeded #3 since they previously defeated both Grant Co./Flasher and Mott-Regent/New England. Those two teams battle it out at Flasher with the winner coming out the #4 seed and having to face the #2 seed out of Region 6. That could be either Divide Co. or Mohall/Lansford/Sherwood, both who are currently 5-0 in Region 6 and will face each other this Friday.
The Night Hawks and RTH play each other at Scranton with both wanting to pick up their first region win and escaping the cellar. It is also homecoming for the Night Hawks.
