Because of local and faraway believers, most with ties to the surrounding Hettinger area in some way, “GivingTuesday” turned into an unbelievable fundraising event for the West River Health Services Foundation.
By TED UECKER
On Tuesday, November 28th, $11,927 was raised from 97 separate gifts ranging from $5 to $1,000 each! There were gifts from as far away as Mesa, Arizona and Nashville, Tennessee and as close by as Lemmon, SD and Hettinger. Young, old and in between – most everyone got in on the Facebook frenzy.
That’s right, the main way to give on this day was through Facebook, as they and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation offered to match up to $2 million for gifts to US nonprofit organizations ($50,000 maximum per nonprofit). The kicker was that it all began at 6:00am MST! Believe it or not, we had someone place a $700 gift at 6:00am sharp! And once the total match was met (we think about 8:45am), then the match was over. Our believers were up to the task, as about thirty or so gave between 6:00 and 8:45am, or roughly about $4,000 worth in gifts. This approximate amount should be our match. However, as of press time, we hadn’t heard of the exact total match from our contacts at GivingTuesday. No matter the match, our believers didn’t stop giving until 10:55 pm! Dedication to the end!
Also on GivingTuesday, Facebook waved their processing fee, which is usually 5.75%. Therefore, more funds went toward the nonprofit organization of people’s choice. What a terrific offer from Facebook!
In West River Health Services Foundation’s case, all of the funds raised are going toward our renovations to our Surgery Center in Hettinger. We are renovating our lighting, our humidity controls, our doors, and eventually, our sterilizer (equipment that cleans the surgery tools). Let’s face it, our patients are tired of driving to Bismarck for many of their surgeries and we’d like to provide more surgeries right here, “close to home.” Therefore, our WRHS Foundation is raising funds to update our Surgery Center so we can do just that. Our new General Surgeon, Dr. Hefty, Dr. Thorngren and other specialists are currently performing many types of surgeries here and hopefully, in the near future, our visiting Orthopedic Surgeons from Bismarck and Dickinson will too.
Thank you to all of the amazing believers who gave toward our Surgery Center renovations. We are still open to gifts for this project, as we are still far from our goal. If you’d like more information or would like to give, please contact Fund Development Officer, Ted Uecker, at 701-567-3666 for a visit; go to Facebook, search West River Health Services, scroll down to Ted’s Fundraiser for WRHSF, click Donate; or send a check, written to WRHSF, 1000 Highway 12, Hettinger, ND, 58639. Together we are making a difference for our area community’s health. And if you’re not already registered on Facebook, please do so for next year’s GivingTuesday. After all, who thought we’d be nearly $16,000 closer to our renovated Surgery Center? Onward!
