John “Jack” Stroklund was born August 3, 1941 in Donnybrook, N.D. at his family farm to John Sr. and Ida (Ennis) Stroklund. Jack grew up in a family of 8 mischievous boys. He attended local grade school and graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1960. After high school he moved out to the west coast with his brothers and worked at various jobs. In 1977, Jack discovered his passion when he went to work as a salesman for Lawson Products, working for that company for 30 years.
John married Norma (Archibald) Evenson on July 20, 1981 in Maui, Hawaii. Norma was the love of his life. They resided in Hettinger, N.D. The couple enjoyed traveling on the many trips John won as a result of his outstanding salesmanship with Lawson, making it to Hawaii 5 different times. John eventually decided to try his hand at retirement but quickly discovered that he preferred to be on the road and making a sale rather than sitting in his easy chair at home. Having retired from Lawson, he was courted by their competitor, Kimball Midwest, and returned to work for Kimball for several years. His success and passion for sales was in large part due to the loyalty he had towards his customers, and their trust that he would always do what was right by them. He was finally forced to retire in 2013 after having numerous back surgeries. In November of 2017 John was diagnosed with lung cancer and after a short fight passed away from his illness on January 2, 2018 at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D. with his loving wife at his bedside.
John will always be known as “Jack” or “Grandpa Jack” by family and grandchildren. He was known to be caring and generous and would give the shirt off his back to help his family. Jack was described as always being kind, funny and loving. He especially loved to tease his grandchildren by asking if they had their eye on any boys / girls and their embarrassment was always met with his deep chuckle and laughter. He enjoyed watching the news, talking about politics, and sneaking a bite of something sweet when Norma wasn’t looking. He found a sense of calm and joy after long hours on the road, and in the years of his retirement, in watching after, and spoiling, the couple’s Yorkshire Terrier’s, Toby and then Rusty.
Those keeping him close to their hearts are his wife, Norma, of 36 years, Stepchildren Rod Evenson of Hettinger, Shelly (Rod) Pagel, Step-Grandchildren Delaney and Keagan Pagel all of Bismarck, Brothers Allan (Jody) Stroklund of Texas, Lynn (Helen) Stroklund, Dale Stroklund, Jim (Laurel) Stroklund, John (Annie) Stroklund all of Washington State, and Tim (Karen) Stroklund of Minnesota, as well as aunts Shirley Quigley of Minot, Madonna Ennis of Williston and Peggy Turner of California. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Don Stroklund.
