February 8th, it was a game that was hyped up to be. Faith, ranked in the top five of SD Class B girls teams with a 16-0 record taking on the Hettinger-Scranton Night Hawks, ranked in the top 10 for Class B ND girls teams.
It was back and forth for the whole game with Faith usually holding a slim lead for much of the first half as they finished the half leading 27-25. The Night Hawks took the lead 35-33 at the third quarter stop. They managed to hang on in the final quarter and at one point held a 43-37 lead with five minutes remaining. The Longhorns kept close and with a minute and seven seconds left got within three. With 23 seconds left Alyssa Andress drove to the bucket and scored but she was call for an offensive foul and the basket was taken away. With 14 seconds left Abbie Kludt was fouled and she calmly made two free throws that was the difference. Faith had a last second shot but it bounced off the rim and the buzzer sounded, Night Hawks winning 49-47. Leading the Night Hawks in scoring were Sam Oase with 14 and Andress had 12.
Next up is the Region 7 tournament at Trinity, Feb. 18, 19 & 21.
Prior to the Faith game in their final region match the Night Hawks easily disposed of the Mott-Regent Wildfire, 75-34 on Feb 7. That put their region record at 11-0. At half time they had 47-16 lead and the continuous clock started in the final quarter. Due to the Night Hawks pressure defense the Wildfire committed 25 turnovers for the game. Seventeen of Alyssa Andress’ team leading 25 points came in the first half. Other double digit scorers were Abbie Kludt 17 and Sam Oase 16. Bree Friedt led the Wildfire with 15.
